Ternary Battery to Become Mainstream Product for EV Production

2018/02/12 | By Alan Lu

As China has promulgated a series of policies and regulations in favor of new energy cars, a high-nickel ternary battery, which is seen as a necessity for the next-gen cars, is gradually becoming the mainstream in the electric vehicle (EV) industry.

A ternary battery is widely accepted by EV makers for high energy density, long cycle life, comparatively high security and relatively low production cost. Among various types of such batteries, those with NCM (lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide) cathode have been increasingly used in electric vehicles, especially at a time when cost of the batteries has gradually decreased over the past years.

However, as China has further cut its subsidy for the purchase of new energy cars and decided to postpone the landing of “double integral” system for one year, some market observers have turned skeptical about the development of the Chinese market for EVs in the short term.

To relieve the concerns and help the market regain confidence, the Chinese government explained that the subsidy will be granted to the EVs with higher endurance mileage, and the EVs fitting the mileage requirement will receive more credits from the upcoming integral system.

In other words, to fulfill the abovementioned requirements, more EV makers would adopt ternary batteries; and the market is expected to be spared from impact by the subsidy cut, and see a sustainable growth. In fact, market demands for ternary batteries have spiraled upward for now.

Also notable is that a couple of suppliers of nickel sulfate, namely Coremax Taiwan Corporation, a maker of oxidation catalysts; and Mechema Chemicals International Corp., a world-leading firm providing catalyst and PTA manufacturing services, are forecast by market observers to benefit from the trend and enjoy significant revenue growth partly on price hikes of nickel sulfate

In general, market insiders hold optimism about the future development of ternary batteries due to excellent endurance mileage. Driven by the enforcement of the said policies by China, a market share of ternary batteries is very likely to keep trending upward in the short term.
