Taipei, Sept. 13, 2011 (CENS)--Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) and Hsinchu County Government demonstrated intelligent electric vehicles (EVs) and low-carbon transportation at the High Speed Railway (HSR) Hsinchu Station, where many EVs and key systems were displayed, with Luxgen Motor Co., Ltd., Yulon Nissan Motor Co., Pihsiang Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (PMMC), and Taiwan Automotive Research Consortium (TARC) allowing visitors test rides on nearby roads to experience low-carbon transportation, including the Luxgen EV+, Nissan LEAF, PMMC Venus, and intelligent buses.

Deputy Economic Minister Huang Chong-chiu says currently most transportation vehicles are gasoline powered and emit ample pollutants, so many governments are trying to develop strategic policies to promote EVs. With strong support from local electrical-machinery, electronics and information and communication technology (ICT) industries, he adds, Taiwan is very suitable to develop the intelligent-EV industry.

According to Huang, the government has decided to invest NT$2.2 billion (US$75.9 million) over the next three years to subsidize EV demonstrations and consumers who buy EVs, as well as budget NT$6.9 billion (US$237.9 million) over the next six years to help development of EV key parts and systems, assembled EVs and EV marketing. By 2013, Taiwan is expected to complete 10 intelligent EV demonstrations with 3,000 intelligent EVs in operation; turn out more than 60,000 EVs by 2016, and control key and indigenous technologies. Also Taiwan aims to sell 15,000 EVs by 2016 to become a top-10 EV production bases globally while creating own-branded EV makers on the island.

The MOEA is also promoting the intelligent EV industry development and innovative service modes through subsidization and tax-reduction to encourage EV key-parts development and EV demonstration.
