First Chant Enterprise Co., established in 1993, specializes in the development and production of CNC (computerized numerically controlled) precision lathes.

The company began life by distributing high-quality CNC lathes of domestic and foreign makes. That business led to the accumulation of experience in the development and servicing of the machines, and in 1997 First Chant set up its own 1,000-square-meter production facility in Fengyuan, in the central Taiwan county of Taichung.

The company says that it can supply complete solutions to customers who encounter problems in the production process, and can help them boost their production efficiency. To provide needed services as quickly as possible, over the past few years the firm has established a number of maintenance branches in mainland China and has developed distribution channels in various industrialized nations.

"When we went into manufacturing," explains Alex Tang, the company's president, "we chose CNC lathes as our major products because we had the expertise to make them and we had a deep insight into what their end users needed the most."

The president says that First Chant has its own research and development department, which is charged with developing state-of-the-art lathes that can attract customers from all over the world. "In the domestic machine-tool industry," Tang comments, "we're relatively small in size but we're flexible in designing specific products to meet the real needs of our customers."

The company's 35 workers have a monthly production capacity of about 12 CNC lathes that are priced at US$40,000 to US$60,000 each. With their high operating accuracy, these lathes are suited for use in such high-tech industries as optoelectronics, electronics, and medical devices.

The best imported precision mechanical parts and components are used to assure the high quality of First Chant's CNC lathes because, Tang explains, "Only such parts can guarantee the operating accuracy of our machines."

The company puts the "Aegis" and "Aural" brands on its products, most of which are sold to customers in mainland China, Southeast Asia, and Taiwan.

Thanks to booming global demand, First Chant has enjoyed annual sales growth in the double digits over the past three years. Tang expects a lower rate of growth this year, however, because of an anticipated slowdown in the global machine-tool market.

To keep sales expanding, the company will take part in the 2005 Taipei International Machine Tool Show, which is to take place on Mar. 20-25 at the Taipei World Trade Center, as well as several machinery shows in mainland China.
